Android Kitkat has certainly been able to create the buzz but what’s new in this version of Android?

Android KitKat has debuted with Google’s flagship device LG Nexus 5. Yes, Finally! Android 4.4 is designed to give users a smooth and faster experience and also with a view to reach to as many people as possible, meaning, Android KitKat can also run on low spec smartphones. By Low-spec phones they reall mean low-spec phones! The phones now need RAM as little as 512MB! Just like that, there are a lot of cool new features that you might want to know.

Let’s have a look at Android KitKat’s Top 10 New Features!

1. New Dialler and Caller ID:

New dialler is now smarter. It prioritises the users’ contacts based on the people they talk to the most. You can also search for nearby people or businesses right from your dialler. If you receive a phone call from a number that is not saved in your contacts, it will automatically look for the information of the caller on the internet!

2. Immersive Mode

The Immersive mode is really interesting. Now you can read books or play games without losing any screen space to status bar and navigation button. In Immersive mode, the focus is fully on your book or on your game and with just one swipe you can bring back your status bar and navigation buttons!

3.  New Hangouts App with SMS/MMS integration

This feature was leaked long before Android KitKat was released but it’s still worth a mention. With this feature, Android is eliminating the stand alone messaging app that has been there in all the previous versions of Android. Now you can check or send SMS from the Hangouts App itself. You can still, of course, instantly message your Google contacts as well using the App. The hangouts app now also supports animated GIF images.

4. Google Now at the heart of the design

Android KitKat is designed in such a way that Google Now stays at the heart of it. Google Now can be directly accessed via Voice Command “Ok Google” which was previously seen in Moto X. This feature was something Google was bound to bring to the OS sooner or later. But what we didn’t know was, Google Now can also be accessed right away by swiping to the left.

5. Screen Recording

You can now record your Android device’s screen right from your phone making it easier for developers to create walkthrough videos, tutorials and stuff like that. The video is saved as an mp4 file on your device. This feature is really cool!

6. Cloud Printing

Android KitKat has a better support for cloud printing. Users will be able to print photos or documents wirelessly through any printer that is connected to Google Cloud Print. Google has also introduced the cloud printing framework to developers so that they can use this utility in the apps that they create.

7.  Device Management Built-in

Ever lost your phone at a hotel or under the pillow? It can be really hard to find your phone. But Android KitKat will take care of it as it has Android Device Manger built right into it. Now you can track your phone via GPS and if you have lost it under your pillow you can just get it to ring from the web application.

8. Chrome WebView

Android apps that feature web content now use Chrome to render web components accurately and quickly. Chromium WebView supports HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript. It supports most of the HTML5 features available in Chrome!

9. Built in Step counter

Android 4.4 now supports two kind of composite sensors Step Detector and Step counter which will track your steps while you’re walking or running or climbing stairs. The Nexus 5 which is the first ever phone to feature Android KitKat offers these two sensors and Google is in talks with other hardware manufacturers to do the same.
